Connected vines drop as items

Breaking a part of a hanging vine drops all of the ones that break below it, to put it simply. I'm not sure why this isn't in the game already, I suppose to use up more durability from shears, but it just makes it very tedious to go breaking them one by one from bottom up. I don't see why cutting a vine off should make the majority of it just poof out of existence, like it currently does, instead of dropping as items.

Will these vines drop when the source is broken by hand or piston, or only by shears? How will the vines know how their source was destroyed? Just some things to think about :)
