I was thinking being able to find and rescue fallen tamed pets (dogs, cats, parrots) from the nether and bring them back to the overworld would be incredibly cool! Since the nether is essentially the 'underworld' of minecraft, I think that if you have a named pet that is slain, they should have a chance to spawn around the player when venturing through the nether, in a similar way to how wandering traders currently spawn around you periodically. The pets would be a slightly transparent, ghostly pale clone of their overworld model and will still have the name given to them above their heads. If you attach a lead to them and are able to take them through a nether portal to the overworld, they respawn as their former self! But be careful, if the pet's ghost is led over a block of soulsand, they will be trapped in the soulsand block forever! I think this would add a very cool reason to enter the nether, and fits the theme of the nether very well.
