If a a leaves block is connected to a log block of its respective type, it can randomly but also very, very rarely plant a sapling nearby. "Nearby" being outside of a 5x5 area (as to not interfere with the tree already there), but within a 15x15(can be increased or decreased) area. If there is another tree within the area, the sapling will not plant as to not completely overpopulate an area. If there is no dirt space, it will not plant either.
This could be used to:
-Slowly expand a forest. More trees!
-More wood to players, but also more trees!
This can be something that presents a challenge, however. If leaves and a log are placed in a build, they still have potential to plant a sapling on any nearby dirt not already occupied.
An idea to make it less intensive on the game for calculations is for it to only happen from sapling-grown trees or player-placed leaves, and not naturally generated from world generation.
