There is currently not much use for the campfire other than the cooking and the smoke for a beacon. So what if the campfire became like a campfire and can be used as a one time (ish) / cheap respawn point? My idea here is... If you set your spawn at a campfire, it can be used as many times as the fire stays lit, if you set the spawn on the campfire and then die, the campfire itself will go out as you respawn on it. So if you die again, you'll respawn to where your bed is, unless you relight that campfire again, the process will repeat itself. You spawn on the campfire, being unlit, you die, and respawn back home onto your original bed. You'll never lose your bed spawn to a campfire, unlike making another bed and sleeping on that. However, you won't be able to skip the night with a campfire, unlike beds.
