Im having a similar issue with my bees...I have 7 beehives on the ground but about 15 blocks from the water and I've noticed my bees are literally going into the water and killing themselves. I cant really cover the water because...well..It's the ocean. I'm assuming its just a problem with the AI

I originally had my small bee farm on a peninsula... if I didn't move them they wouldn't still bee here.

I'm sorry I made that pun.

As of June 2020 this is still a major problem. I have 5 beehives, and they were all full of nests. I stop paying attention for a couple of days on a build project or adventure and they all fly off north into the desert. North is desert, south and east is the rest of the town and west is the sea. They consistently can be found wandering the desert, famous for its flowers and then drowning in the rivers, sometimes even on the way back following me with a flower.

I'd love them to be able to remember where their hive is, or even for a way to feed a single bee a honey block to make it a queen which can spawn babies on its own so long as there is an available space. That'd be great and so much less tedious effort. They're super cute and useful, but the thought of keeping them indoors instead of flying around the town into the flowerbeds is tragic :(

I've come up with a solution that sort of solves the issue and gives the vibe that the bees are free. Its a tunnel that im dubbing the Pollentunnel, after a polytunnel that is used in agriculture. It keeps the bees somewhat enclosed and "funnels" them towards the flowers, this way they can wander if they like but since their MO is at the end of the tunnel they'll always make their same way back

A Length of 22 is most efficent as they tend to have that kind of perception when it comes to looking for flowers, You can get away with a longer one if you have more bees, i.e. Length=Width+2? that kind of fomula seems to work okay for me

As of September 2021, this is still an issue. I have my nests in the center of a very large island and all the best eventually wonder out to the ocean (over 100 blocks away) and drawn themselves. It's quite disappointing since they're one of the only things that give movement and life to the game.
