Here on Java, there is something like a 0.2 delay after activation before the shield actually starts blocking anything.
A problem I have with it is that there are nearly no ingame ways of learning that: With the current animation, the shield raises almost instantly, and so I would expect the shield to become effective _at least_ as soon as the animation ends. Coming from a background of games where parrying at the last moment is not only a feature, but the preferable choice, it was very confusing at first when mobs could just hit me through the shield for no apparent reasons. When I started suspecting there was a delay, I even thought of it as a lag-induced bug rather than a feature.
Even today, I still have a hard time getting a grasp over how much time I will need to think ahead before blocking.
Please, make the shield-raising animation longer, maybe more "animated" too, so that it reflects its mechanics, and so players both old and new can build a real feel of "when the shield does this motion, I'm still vulnerable.".
