I agree; "balanced challenge" long ago became "tedious". I'd keep the current names when on an item (just using a generic name on books), but actually combine more. Some suggestions:

    • Fire protection with Fire aspect & Flame
    • Impaling &/or Lure in with the Aqua ones
    • Multishot, Cleaving & Sweeping Edge (& Thorns?)
    • Feather-Falling (& Riptide?) with Knockback & Punch (Repulsion)

To go further, I'd even consider taking this one step further.

Combine some/all of the enchantments that just directly improve the item

    • Sharpness
    • Efficiency
    • Power
    • Protection
    • Lure (if not in the water one)
    • Impaling (if not in the water one)
    • Piercing (more analogous than Quick-Charge, as it scales to IV)

You could also combine a few more by inventing less obvious themes:

    Lightning:

    • Chanelling
    • Quick Charge
    • Blast Protection

    Spider's Aspect:

    • Bane of Arthropods
    • Silk Touch
    • Future Armour?

    Spirit:

    • Smite
    • Soul Speed
    • Future Tool?

There are currently 36 enchantments in the game (excluding curses). It's just too many books to try to store, remember, roll for, etc. Combining everything either of us listed would bring it down to just over a dozen, (which is likely too far, but it wouldn't have to be all, and room to grow is nice.)

    1. Fire
    2. Water
    3. Multiattack
    4. Luck
    5. Repulsion
    6. Potency
    7. Returning
    8. Lightning
    9. Spider's Aspect
    10. Spirit
    11. Unbreaking
    12. Mending
    13. Frost Walker (More cold enchantments to go with this would be cool)

Note that none of my suggestions allow you to apply multiple current enchantments in one go, they just make one book applicable to more types of equipment.
