When an item has low durability (say 2% left or even a static count like 10 uses or so), the player would hear an obvious "chink" or "clink" sound as an indication that the item is about to break. Every use would play this "damaged" sound until broken or repaired.
Players are mining the blocks in-front of them, eyes locked in the middle of the screen. They have no known reason to look at the item's durability-bar down in the inventory slots.
This would give the player a cue to-do-so, before it is too late.

While I would like that too (voted), I think a sound would be more-obvious as an indication of being "nearly-broken" then would "low durability" and therefore treated as a more-serious indicator by the community as a whole.
