Storm glass - knowing the weather while underground

You know those weird drop-shaped ampoules with crystals inside they used to use way back before they had the weather channel? Nah you probably don't.

(I don't remember where I got this picture but mine looks just like this)

Anyways, the basic use would be that you could carry one with you when you go mining deep underground - it won't predict the weather like the real analogue, but rather will tell you what it is currently.

Would be nice if it could predict the weather one minute in advance, but doubt it would be easy for the developers to pull off with the current weather mechanics. 

Could be crafted with a water bottle, sugar above and below it, and redstone to the left and right of it.

Very simplistic idea, but a must-have for people who neglect to come out of their hole.

  hmm. you can hear rain and thunder from quite a way down/through walls. So if you hear rain when you are near/nearing the surface, then it is raining. If you can't, then it is not. Cool idea, but only useful in deep caves, underwater or underground bases.
