When a spot gets griefed by a Creeper, TNT or anything explosive explosion, it makes a hole, but it gets covered slowly through an in-game year (365 in-game days). The hole gets replaced by dirt, or any other material depending on the biome (e.g. gravel if in cave). This feature can be disabled in the world settings or a gamerule command so holes by explosion won't get covered.
