This would work by detecting blocks underneath soul sand or magma to increase the speed at which a player is moved by a bubble column (in a similar way to campfires rising higher when hay bales are underneath them.
For Soul Sand, if a skull (or another block from the upcoming Nether Update) were placed beneath them, it would increase the speed at which mobs, players and items were moved up in the water stream.
For magma, if lava was placed underneath them, then the speed at which mobs, players and items were dragged down would increase.
I think this would make the game a lot more fun as at the moment, bubble columns heading downwards are slow compared to other methods of transport, and would save a lot of time that could be used for other more creative projects.
