Fuel economy in a new way

What if lamps wouldn't be infinitely glowing, just with redstone connected? What if you actually needed engines, cabels, generators and transformations? What if torches wouldn't be infinitely?

I think of something like one coal per torch would let glow it for 10 days. Generators would use the coal more efficiently. What do you guys think?
