Where I live in New Jersey, USA, we have these bees where the male bees dont have stingers and the female bees do. Most importantly, they love to burrow through wood and make nests in them as opposed to a hive.
Basically what im proposing is a type of bee, a carpenter bee, that burrow into would planks and wood, this is also done VERY slowly. The only way to defend against them destroying wood would be to 'treat' the wood with oils, making treated wood. These oils can infused into the wood by smelting the wood with coal coke, which is made by combining clay and coal together in a crafting bench.
I know its a wierd idea, but take it and tweak it as you may!
