Bee hive storage

This might be too out of bounds but, bee hives in real life have have racks for the bees to live in and make beautiful hexagons. Now what if you would put a bee hive in the lower row of a crafting table and you would place 3 chests in the row above (creating sort of a T shape). The block that comes out can be placed down and once right clicked it reveals a menu with 3 tabs each tab contains item slots in a 4x3 grid, not making it too big and OP
For animations: it could open like a chest and you could see the tabs or racks going up by selecting the corresponding tab in the UI
