I've played a lot of games and invisible sound design helps enhance the experience a lot. Each biome should have their own "ambient" sounds. Cold biomes should have high short and crisp piano notes and deserts should have maracas that sound like a rattlesnake. It can literally be a few notes lasting only a few seconds, but can really give an lasting impression like a leitmotif.
Happy or even goofy tones should play often in any village that the players have high reputation in, giving players a sense of security as villages are the only true natural safe haven in Minecraft while entering any illager structure or stronghold should play eerie notes, warning the player of upcoming dangers. Upon all of that, the local biome sounds should be designed to play in harmony with the village themes to give each a unique ring to make it so that it feels environment plays a role.
At night, happy tones should be quieter or shorter and eerie sounds should be more powerful. Neutral ambient sounds should shift to sound like a warning. I feel as if the music/sounds in Minecraft don't inform the players very much, like they don't say "this place is dangerous" or "you are safe here, for now." Instead, they are like "oh you died? here's some Sweden by c418" The music should encourage players with feedback based on where you are, almost as if steve, the player, has "gut instincts." This would bring balance to the world, telling the player that there's still good in the world
