The axe is outclassed in every way by the sword because:
1.Even if the axe does more damage, the sword still has more DPS. The axe loses a lot because big numbers of mobs are better combated with the sweeping edge and faster firerate. The damage bonus of the axe is negated by the fact that it takes mostly the same amount of hits to kill a common mob (3 hits) . Theoretically an axe can kill with 2 hits, if one is critical, but that advantage quickly goes away because of smite or sharpness
2. The sword has 4 more enchantment.
The sword should be a lower-damaged fast weapon great for crowd control, the axe should be a high-damage slow weapon great for smiting enemies one by one
Here are some Ideas:
-the fire aspect and sweeping edge should be available only for swords, and the knockback only for axes
-a modified sweeping edge could be developed for axes, like a vertical slash efect, affecting mobs who are in a conga line
-maybe critical hits should only be for axes, or have a higher damage when used with an axe (175% for example)
-diamond axes having 10 damage
-axes should have looting
-cant use an axe with a shield
