Fossils at the moment are basically useless. To give them some use and substance, I think 20% of the time in a desert/swamp village a villager that gives you an exclusive fossil quest should spawn. You'd have to find the closest fossils to the village, WITHOUT an exclusive fossil-marked map or anything, of course, that would cause it to become an insanely difficult challenge, but I think that's fine, it would be rather interesting and challenging that way.
Fossils are INSANELY rare, it's absurd how rare they are, yet when you find them, they don't pose a way to distinguish them once broken. Instead, once broken, it would be very interesting if fossils had rarity distinguishing numbers before the "Bone Block" part. The least rare fossils would have numbers between 501 and 1000, the slightly more rare between 500 and 101, the rare ones between 100 and 11, the super rare between 10 and 4, and the rarest between 3 and 1.
Once fossils get taken to the fossil-quest villager, primarily you would get rewarded, and then you'd get a message to come back after 1 in-game day, as then the villager would distinguish which reptile's bones those are, and not only that, also give back some fossils. The reptile options could range from 3 to 10, the choices are vast, since the reptiles themselves wouldn't be in-game. Once you get some fossils back, the fossils' name would change to "(rarity number) (reptile) bones." Dragon bones would be nice.
