When traveling between two points in the overworld, making use of the Nether can speed things up. However, it can still take a very long time to travel through the Nether if the distance is big enough. A Minecraft world can be enormous, and on large servers travel between destinations can potentially take days, even via the Nether.
I have seen suggestions to add player-built teleportation devices, and although this could be an improvement, I see it as too simple and obvious. That is why I suggest implementing Nether gates instead.
What are they?
Nether gates work like End gates, but in a much more chaotic way. Like End gates, Nether gates would come in connected pairs which could be traversed either direction. However, there would be more of them, and there would be no "hub" where players could access all gates. Instead, they would be scattered and strewn throughout the Nether randomly.
How will players use them?
Because of their structure being more like a ball of yarn than spokes on a wheel, it is probable that very long journeys could be significantly shortened by locating the right Nether gate or two. On the other hand, trips of less than 20 minutes would gain nothing from end gates.
Exact implementation could vary. For example, players might occasionally find a cluster of three nether gates. Or perhaps there could be a way to locate nether gates, similar to locating the end portal, so they can be exceptionally rare structures, yet still discoverable by players who need them.
On large servers this could help draw players out away from spawn. Players could build bases very far from each other, yet still have relatively easy access to each other and spawn without the use of the /tp command.
