If more curses and enchantments are added, there should be a limited number of positive enchantments an item can have, however adding curses to an item increases the number of enchantments which can be added.
This would allow for more personalised items and more interesting gameplay. For example, you could have a sword which drains health when held - but gains health on a successful attack, which would lead to a more aggressive and risky playstyle; or you could have a bow which deals more damage but has a slower charging speed, incentivising being more careful when aiming.
Though this would only work if more curses are added, as currently there only two curses.
