Some people say that armour in Minecraft is just about getting diamond. While that is not entirely true, I can see what they mean. Gold armour is almost completely pointless. Leather so much so that I don't even bother making a set. And by the time you find a full set of chain, you already probably have full diamond. Some suggested solutions to this include armour weight where wearing better gear also makes you slower (a horrible idea). I wanted to put my two cents in before the combat update 2.0, in case the armour weight thing is being considered. Here are my suggestions for improving the armour balence.
My idea is that you could use either leather armour or chain armour as well as your other armour. I know what you're thinking. "What?" but this idea is actually quite simple.
Armour would be split into two catagories: plate armour (gold, iron and diamond) and normal armour (leather and chainmail).
You could have the ability to craft normal armour and plate armour together, to achive extra armour points. This would be balanced, because leather armour would then be desirable to gain extra armour, and chain would be better but as it is very rare leather would still be useful.
Plate armour combined with leather would become padded armour, and combined with chain would be chain armour
Either that, or you could have two sets of armour slots in your inventory. Outer and inner. (these could be used for other things later as well)
