I could not find an existing thread on this idea.
The addition of smithing table could have a lot of potential behind it. Metal tier items are the standard in the game, whilst lower tier items are made obsolete, as most players quickly skip them. Leather armour is almost neglected, as crafting it proves considerably more expensive and inefficient in comparison to iron (unless there are many cows around). This makes the only customisable armour practically unused.
I propose to make the smiting table as one of the key blocks in progression by making crafting of metalwork items* on it exclusively. This would diversify the progression of the game and increase the possibilities in the future, as well as balance the existing items. Although it is only a small requirement, it would make crafting such items harder on the spot and making lower tier items the quick on-the-go solution they realistically are. The smithing table recipe is not complex, yet it requires the crafting bench, making it a perfect next step in making higher tier items. Giving it such functionality would bring it to the light and would be likely to be noticed by the players without too much confusion, as it is only logical what a smithing table would do.
Another thread brought up making completely new tools/weapons on the smithing table, which could also link in into its future use, as it opens the doors to making more interesting item recipes.
*When I mention items, I mean equipable items, which are tools, weapons and armour.
