Quick note; I will be arbitrarily categorizing block sounds based on the "most associated" block.
Now, on to the actual suggestion:
For quite a while, many of Minecraft's blocks have sounded incredibly similar to one another. In most cases, this is fine, as it makes sense for a stone block and a furnace to sound about the same when walked on. However, there are some times when this doesn't work out. An example of this would be how glass, stone, and obsidian block all sound the exact same.
In fact, there are over 160 blocks that all share the same "stone" sound effect. To put that into perspective, there are about 80 blocks that have the "wood" sound effect, 44 blocks that have neither of those.
But, one of the most recently added blocks, the lantern, has its own unique sound effect! Nothing else shares it and it is, in my opinion, quite good. So, I believe that if the lantern can have its own sound, why not distinguish some of the other blocks with some new sound categories? Here are one of the proposals I have - just to start the conversation:
The "glass" sound category. It would include all fragile blocks, such as glass, panes, ices, glowstone, etc. I propose it sound something similar to when you step on glass with a boot (the crunching / crackly noise).
I would suggest more, but I only have 1500 characters. But, I'd also love to see what you guys think of this and what other categories you'd like to see added!
