I know that Live-action/Live-action meets animation movies have been quite a trend right now, but Minecraft: the Movie Should in no way become live-action; it should be fully animated! Here's why:
- Budget and Time
I actually have experience with 3D-modelling and animation courtesy of me learning Blender, what I can say is that MODELLING BLOCKS, STRUCTURES, CHARACTERS, ETC. IS EASIER BECAUSE MINECRAFT IS BLOCKY!!! most blocks in Minecraft are cubes so as mobs, structures, etc. which are incredibly simple to model and texture (In Blender, just press Shift+A, select cube, and you now have an untextured block), the hardest blocks to model in Minecraft I can think of are pistons, anvils & enchanting tables, which the anvil would simply be 4 cubes scalled to be the right sizes, then to stack them on top of each other. I'm not going to model an anvil as of writing this, but I believe it would take at most 5-8 minutes to model and texture an anvil, thanks to how blocky Minecraft is. This also applies to structures (such as trees, houses, elements of terrain, etc.) as well. In fact, you could create a program that converts a structure-block file from a Minecraft world into a 3D model to save time modeling even further.
If you do a Live-action film, then you would probably have to spend an hour making a fake anvil, which is not Ideal and doesn't take advantage of Minecraft's Blockiness. Making the film animated saves time, which is important for developing the characters, story, etc. This movie shouldn't be bad simply because you didn't have enough time to develop the Personality of the teenage girl in the movie, for example, and they end up making some not ideal choices.
2. Minecraft is bright and vibrant
The reason why the Live-action movie Detective Pikachu looks fine is that it is a detective movie, WHEN A LIVE-ACTION MOVIE IS DARK, IT IS EASY TO HIDE YOUR MISTAKES, WHILE MINECRAFT IS BRIGHT!!! Minecraft is a very bright and vibrant game; if the movie is live-action meets animation, then it is far easier to see your mistakes. It would probably be nauseating to watch as well if you simply had animated characters walking around a real-live set or vise-versa.
3. Minecraft is NOT known for being realistic.
Minecraft is not a realistic game in the slightest. Though having Shaders in the movie is totally fine (in fact, it probably should have shaders), having the movie look like it has ultra-realistic textures & shading, clean edges, real grass on grass blocks, etc. is not ideal. IF THE MOVIE IS TOO REALISTIC, THEN IT WOULDN'T LOOK LIKE MINECRAFT ANYMORE!!! It would feel more like real-life than a video game in that scenario, and if you try to make it look more like Minecraft, you should probably just make it fully animated.
4. Making Ambitious effects is incredibly difficult!
There is only so much you can do in a real-life set. In the real world, it is incredibly difficult to make a person look like they can fly, for example, or make an enormous dragon breath purple flames that make a building dissolve into purple dust (seems familiar). However, YOU HAVE A LOT MORE FREEDOM IN A VIRTUAL WORLD!!! making the dragon breath purple fire example could be hard because we don't have a purple fire that dissolves buildings in real life, so as making a dragon, so you need to find complex solutions to these problems, such as perspective. In animation, however, you can make fire any colour you want. This is just a broad example, of course. Most of these Live-action problems are different from the ones I mentioned, but this still applies.
5. Nobody wants Minecraft: the Movie to be Live-Action!
Whenever Minecraft: the Movie is mentioned to be Live-Action, most players tend to disagree. I see hundreds of people online saying that Minecraft: the Movie has to be animated. Mojang has a history of listening to the community, especially as of recently, so please, Mojang and Warner Bros, IF YOU WANT THIS MOVIE TO SUCCEED, THEN DON'T MAKE IT SOMETHING THE COMMUNITY DOESN'T WANT!!! If you really want it to be Live-Action, then I suggest making an Animated version first, then creating a Live-Action version in the future (similar to some other Live-action Movies that are going to come out soon).
I hope this was helpful. I want to get this out before Mojang and Warner Bros starts recording the film.
