Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

I feel like that kinda makes them an op light source if that makes sense, like they can be placed on the ceiling unlike torches so they can't be placed on walls. Maybe they could make another light source off that walls or update torches

Lanterns that mount to sides of blocks. We currently have hanging or sitting lanterns. why not mounted lanterns to sides of blocks.

J"appa said on Reddit that the reason for not adding was to allow the torch and lantern to co-exist, keeping the lantern from making the torch useless. But if you take the example of tools, a diamond pickaxe essentially renders all other tiers of tools useless - because it's an upgrade. Technically speaking, a lantern is an upgrade of the torch. What about using a tripwire hook to hang it from?  They already show up all kinds of random places, why not give them another decorative use?

Perhaps you could hang the lantern from a tripwire hook on the wall

It should be a separate variant of the lantern, one that requires ingots instead of nuggets because of the necessary mounting hardware. They should also be more “ornate”and by that I mean the mounting hardware should look of wrought iron, etc.

Also should have more than just the iron variant: Gold / brass, copper for oil-rubbed bronze, and…. something somethint mumble mumble for brushed nickel / chrome look.

I find it incredibly strange that we can't hang lanterns off the sides of blocks, especially when bells and the new hanging signs can. Just like those, they could be attached by a pole made of wood or iron, and hang from the pole while still only occupying 1 block of space. It could also just be attached to the wall by a metal plate of some kind.
It's incredibly common to see wall-mounted lamps and lanterns in both modern times and the medieval/fantasy setting that Minecraft takes place in. Placing them outside a house looks tacky if you have to put a fence or something else above it.
Jappa's gone on saying that this would make torches useless, but why does that matter? It's something that takes more to craft and is there for aesthetics. You aren't going to remove the froglight because it replaces glowstone, or the other way around.

Agree: like the incoming Hanging Signs, they could show a staff planted into the wall from wich the lantern chain falls down.

I think they should hang on a rod like the new hanging signs. That would be nice. I think the rod should be iron. Make it so that you can put it at the end of a hanging sign or something as a nice decorative end. On another note, imagine banners and flowerpots being able to do that too?

Now that we are approaching update 1.20, I see the possibility of lanterns behaving like hanging signs. The signs that you can put against the wall have a wooden support. Not using this for lanterns as well, I see as a missed opportunity!
