I recently opened a new world. I built a house near a village and set up a road. I used the new sweet berry bushes as a low cost boundary that would keep mobs away from the path and protect villagers from zombies. I ended up planting hundreds of bushes around the perimeter of the village and along paths. There was plenty of open space inside and walking from building to building was no problem. Despite this over the course of a couple minecraft days the entire village had killed itself on the bushes. Villagers should be more aware of the damage they are doing to themselves and avoid it. Without a revised villager AI it'll be very difficult to preserve the lives of the villagers without high effort construction like long boundary walls.
