Note: THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE AETHER MOD!
Due to Ostriches being added in the new update, what if there was an extremely rare, slower, and WAY larger variant?
Moas were huge emu-like birds that lived in New Zealand until the 1440s, when they were hunted to extinction. Moas were taller than ostriches and has long, wiry feathers like hair, similar to emus today. They lived in forests (temperate rainforests) and grasslands.
Moas in Minecraft would be a large variant of the Ostrich, except they wouldn't be able to run (presumably Ostriches can when they are added). Moas would be peaceful, and could be found extremely rarely in jungle biomes, forest biomes, or plains biomes.
But only on islands.
This mob would be island exclusive, meaning that the land they spawn on MUST be surrounded on all four sides by at least 4 blocks of water in an ocean biome. This way the game can make sure that Moas spawn on islands. If this method does not work, then the devs could come up with another way to guarantee spawning on an island. Minecraft needs an island-exclusive mob, after all. Imagine entering an island paradise and seeing giant, peaceful birds found nowhere else.
If a Moa is too similar to the flying beasts from the Aether mod, then the yet-even larger Elephant Bird (Aepyornis maximus) could be used. This beast lived in Madagascar until the 1700s.
Other island-dwelling mobs could include the extinct large Caribbean ground sloths that lived in Hispaniola, or a hippopotamus, or a giant tortoise...
But the Moa would definitely be the most interesting sight.
