Certain animals have little to no use, and ultimately give people little reason to respect or marvel at them or even think about them. I propose the addition of two things to over haul bats, a new event, and a new mob varient.
Peaceful Night Event-
The bats will still be an ambient mob of course, but there is still much more beauty to be unlocked. Bats, as a rare event will flock from their caves and take to the skies at dusk, in great numbers, their bodies will turn the sky black. The bats will spend the night above ground, then disappear back into their caves come dawn. Whilst the bats remain in the sky, hostile mobs will not spawn, giving you a Peaceful Night.
Rabid Bats-
There must also be a reason to have bats in the back of your mind whilst you travel through the catacombs below you... The bats, usually peaceful, are swooping around you in droves. The bats you had disregarded earlier are not the normal peaceful variant, but are hostile sky piranhas. They devour any mob that comes into their area, be they a villager or zombie, skeleton or creeper. This will give you reason to look around you at the bats which hang peacefully above you and choose to sneak past them rather than wake them whilst sprinting. Should they wake, they can drop bat skin, which can be crafted to leather.

In summary:
Bats rarely leave cave to make a night without mobs.
A hostile varient of bats will spawn on the ceilings of caves in large groups (8-20) sometimes.
Sneaking past these mobs will not wake them.
They will drop bat skin which is craftable into leather.
