Command Machine in one block

Command Blocks are really cool, however when making a machine with them, they take up a lot of room. I was thinking if there was a block (Maybe called the Command Unit) that could have the equivalent of a machine in it, but only took up one block, that would really help, especially with map making. It could maybe send you to a different dimension where you built the machine there, but all the commands run in that dimension will run as if at the Command Units location in the over world?

  Functions would work, it's just that something like this would be nice for the more engineer type creation, server designing, and easier for sharing, plus there's a lot of stuff that redstone can do that a function can't, such as redstone repeaters, or having redstone compactors, or pistons, and etc.
