    I think this mechanic should override ore veins or create new veins in stone anywhere within a cube area around an abandoned mineshaft, plus 3 blocks in all directions.

    What if mineshafts have a lot of one ore but have almost entirely removed a different ore.
    Since most people would make a mineshaft so that they could get one type of ore, This means you could get unlucky and have a mineshaft that completely lacks diamonds or emeralds but has tons of coal.

    This would make searching for and exploring mineshafts far more rewarding than simple spelunking or strip mining. Right now mineshafts are far more dangerous than regular caves with their blind corners and cave spiders, but their extra loot is only rewarding early game. The increased ore spawn would balance them for mid and late game exploration.

    The loot chests should also reflect the ore type: iron mines have iron armor/tools, lapis mines have enchanted items, redstone mines have redstone circuit parts, etc. Removing or severely limiting other types of ore within the shaft would be good balance.
