    Great idea, especially with Mojang possibly revisiting combat for a future update.

    Another way to do it would be to have, piercing, cutting, force, and internal damage, as well as having the different types of armour protect better against the different types of damage.

    Leather could protect a little bit against force based damage but barely anything against the other types.

    Chain could protect highly against cutting damage but barely anything against the other types.

    Iron could protect against piercing and cutting but not as much against force.

    Diamond would basically be a stronger version of iron.

    Internal damage would be any type of damage that bypassed the armour unless that armour had a enchantment to protect against that specific type of internal damage (magic, respiration, fire etc.)

    The category thing is already in the game:we have melee and projectile damage, which are covered by armor, and magic damage, which includes evokation fangs, potion effects, guardians lasers etc, which are NOT covered by the armor, but covered by the Protection enchantment. The rest of the idea is still good
