In the spirit of the 'Doing More With Ore' theme. I wasn't sure whether to post it as a comment, or its own thread, so I went with the latter.
Gold in Minecraft is a bit of an odd one. Golden tools are very rarely used, as although not bad, they break very quickly. This is an idea that would give them more potential, while also giving Redstone a use for more casual players.
To craft an Electrified tool, the recipe is a Gold tool, surrounded by Redstone dust.
Electrified tools have very low durability, equal to, or even worse than, regular Gold tools. However, on hitting mobs they deliver a 'Static Shock', which deals no damage, but leaves the mob unable to attack for a short time - which would vary with difficulty.
This would make Gold and Redstone more exciting finds, and give them more utility for casual players who don't build powered tracks or elaborate redstone contraptions.
Electrified tools would be particularly useful against Creepers, by preventing them from detonating. They would also present an interesting alternative to Diamond weapons in PvP.
