I for one feel for few things; 1) there should be more archetypal monsters in the game 2) we need tougher opponents to find on spares occasions and 3) we need something to give value to bane of arthropods. So why not shoot these topics with one arrow and write a review for a long time idea I've had, being the centipede.
Now this monster would be exactly what it says on the tin; A large centipede that is preferrably based on one of the more predatory species, such as the voracious scolopendra gigantea, so as to justify it's hostility. And of course like with spiders it could possibly turn passive during daytime, this is to give the player some breathing room when morning comes around.
The Centipede would also be one of the first (commonplace) monsters in the Vanilla game to have multiple segments that trail behind it in a train-esque manner. The head and first three segments comprising a "main body" that takes the brunt of damage with several other segments following that may yield additional health to this monstrosity. Otherwise it's damage is consistent, but like all other monsters scales with difficulty.
Another idea being that, like with the titular arcade game monsters from centipede, it would generate new segments upon eating something large enough, maybe a chicken? It would be an interesting easter egg.
Now this creature would spawn sparsely, I'm thinking a pattern similar to slimes, where they would spawn in certain uncommon biomes based on the lunar cycle or in specifically noted chunks underground. Now of course they wouldn't spawn in swamplands with slimes, that would cause too much clutter. So maybe make them show up in jungles instead.
Now the main reason for going out of your way to fight these things (other than self-defense of course) is for their unique drop. A centipede "jaw" which could have a use of either making a grappling hook that can be used to scale terrain. Or perhaps it can be used to make some manner of other item, other potential ideas for drops are worth discussing.
Otherwise, here is a TL;DR list to run down over my suggestion.
Anatomy: A large arthropod with dozens of legs and two large pseudo-fang like structures
Behavior: Neutral (Turns hostile either in the dark or when not at full health)
Spawn: Underground in Randomly selected chunks and Jungle biomes on certain nights
Mobile: Crawls, Segmented
Attacks: Bite (3 on easy, 5 on normal, 7 on hard)
Defense: 24 Health points on main body, 18 Health points on segments (12 hearts on main body, 9 hearts per segment), Weak to weapons with the enchantment “Bane of Arthropods”, Individual segments can be slain to shorten monster, Following segments automatically slain when severed from main body
Drops: Centipede Jaw (0-2, head only)
