Redstone Comparator on furnace should only count input queue size

Trying to make an autosmelter, I realised a redstone comparator on a furnace gives signal strength based on the content of all three inventory slots (input, fuel, output). 

I find this illogical. I can't find an example of where the sum of those three slots would be interesting.

A fuel can (usually) smelt multiple items so knowing how many items are in the fuel slot is useless. So is knowing how many are in the output slot because usually you just want to empty them using a hopper.

The only real use for a redstone comparator on a furnace is to figure out if there's items in the input queue - then act accordingly.

Could this be changed, pleased?

    Or better yet, be able to measure independent slots depending on what side the comparator is facing: for example front for input, back for output and sides for fuel.
