And when you hold it in your hand giving the effect of resistance when clothed with a turtle shell

    I don't get why it gives you resistance. Could you please explain why?

    Because turtles are sufficiently resistant mobs, there is even a potion of turtle resistance

    That's only for the potion though and I don't see the Turtle Helmet giving the player resistance which has more Scutes in the recipe then a melee weapon.
