By crafting one torch with one phantom membrane, you will receive a phantom torches. What do these do? They are exactly the same as normal torches, but can only be broken or seen when holding a phantom torch yourself.
They would offer a way to light up an area without having to figure out how to get lava into that specific place or sneak a glowstone under a carpet. They would do so without actually becoming ubiquitous, because phantom membrane isn't exactly easy to get in large quantities.
Along with fixing a problem with building (the aesthetic appeal of having nothing in a certain place combined with the mechanical need to block mob spawns), they would also add another powerful use to one of the most useless items in the game (once you have an elytra you also have mending, almost guaranteed).
If possible, phantom torches not emitting light but blocking mob spawning would make the item even better. If not, it would be cool if you could place them, break the block underneath, and the torch would not pop off, because floating lights could then potentially be possible.
