I'm quite sure that almost every player that builds has had the thought that "Darn, i wish i could make it impossible for mobs to spawn here without having to place ugly torches everyhere.."
It's been a issue in minecraft for a long time, especially in survival, that mobs WILL spawn on places you do not light up properly, which you also do not want to light up. Let's say you have a nice house with a cool roof. Placing torches on the roof will not look very nice. Placing glowstone on the roof also might ruin it, and so will sea lanterns and the likes. What Minecraft needs is a way for players in survival and other modes to place a block to stop mob spawning there.
Placing string down will place a tiny but barely noticeable "mark" on the block it's placed, and is therefore ideal for this idea. So, my suggestion is quite simple: Make mobs unable to spawn on placed string.
It's a nice way to prevent mobspawning on places you do not want them, and it can't be placed everywhere due to its hitbox being big. It's ideal for things like roofs and the likes.
If not string, then some other "invisible" block to prevent mobspawn would greatly benefit us players that build a lot.
