Neutral status effect. Could be used as a tool or offensively.
When a player is under Midas Touch, if the item that a player has in a hand is a food item or a potion, it turns into a gold ingot. But that comes at a great cost: for each gold ingot created, the player loses half a heart. When the player reaches half a heart, it stops turning things into ingots until regains the full heart and can turn other item into gold again (like Poison status effect). It doesn't kill the player but leaves him very vulnerable.
As a tool, it can be used to transform cheap things into gold (maybe some really cheap items cannot be transformed - for balance purposes) and heal later when the effect has passed. In PvP though, that effectively disables your enemy's ability to heal by itself for a while. There are three downsides to this:
- The potion should be quite expensive to make, to prevent abuse, and
- If a player with Midas touches you with their hands, sword or arrow, you also gain the effect
- Not too long duration to prevent it being OP during PvP
