I do love that we have 16 colors with which to dye things but, sometimes, they are just too bright. Especially in the case of the new Concrete and Concrete Dust blocks. So I would like to suggest adding tones (or shades) to each color; three lighter and three darker. To do this, it would require the creation of a few new things.
First, the creation of new dyes with the titles of Light, Lighter, and Lightest for paler colors; and Dark, Darker, and Darkest for darker ones. These colors would be the colors that you get when you dye a Leather Chestplate any color and then add 1, 2, or 3 Bone Meal or Ink Sacs. The variation in color would be heftily expanded while not overtaxing the system.
Second, I'd like to suggest the creation of a Dye Satchel, a bag in which you can only place Dyes. This will help players keep their Dyes organized and easily accessible.
Third, apply these tonal values to all blocks which can be Dyed. This is a simple process of re-skinning and naming.
These three simple things will allow for such variation in building and creativity that it is akin to creating an entirely new game. The dark, Gothic-inspired builds, the stained glass windows, the vast metropolises... Everything would benefit.
