Yet another taken from my reddit XD I wish I had remembered sooner that there was an official feedback site.
Bright Sand is easily a late early-game to early mid-game block. A single piece of Sand plused by four Glowstone Dust will create two Bright Sand. This block is sand coloured with bits of Glowstone Dust yellow mixed throughout. It also gives off a glow similar to a Redstone Torch.
However, if you smelt Bright Sand in a furnace, you will recieve an opaque, pastel-yellow Smooth Lantern. Smoothly textured and dyeable, Smooth Lanterns would be a welcome addition to MineCraft. Many builders yearn for a replacement for oddly textured Glowstone and decidedly medieval-looking Redstone Lanterns.
The recipe, though simplistic, would mean braving the Nether, which never goes as well as you plan. Interference from mobs, fall damage, and lava make creating Smooth Lanterns a labor-intensive health hazard. But I think most MCers will agree that the risk is worth it for that perfect light. :)
Edit: I wanted to better explain the Dyeing process
When creating Bright Sand, you can add four Dye of your choice to get two (Colore) Bright Sand, which then can be smelted into two (Color) Smooth Lanterns.
Example: Adding 4 Cyan Dye to one Bright Sand yields two Cyan Bright Sand. The block would have speckles of not just Glowstone Yellow, but Cyan as well. These can then be smelted further into Cyan Smooth Lanterns, the color is more pastel, but it is most definitely that lovely Cyan teal. The color of the light itself goes unchanged.
