A lot of people are mad that they changed combat, but a lot of people also love it. I think we could have both ways with an energy bar. (It's kind of like how TellTale's Minecraft Storymode season 2, combat works.)
You can spam click with a sword for a while, but the energy bar decreases moderately faster and makes it take longer to re-charge energy when it runs out (not a whole lot though). But if you are swinging at a moderate pace, the energy bar will slowly go down and fill up quicker (If you decrease it faster then it is filling.).
Simple tasks wont decrease your energy as much as swinging weapons and tools.
If you try to do something when your energy bar is out, you have to wait for it to re-charge before doing that thing (It's like one or two seconds).
There could also be an insomnia bar that underlays the energy bar. Your energy bar would only fill up quickly to the point of your insomnia bar, then it fills up slowly the rest of the way. If your insomnia bar is close to running out, phantoms spawn. If it runs out, a giant phantom spawns, or you fall asleep without a bed (depends on what the devs or you think is best.).
