Since pistons have been around, they've been used to create farms where people break the item with the piston for collection. However, there's been a bit of a hassle about that method the entire time. You either have to put your build up slightly higher than you want and add a noisy mine cart underneath to collect all of the items, or you just stick with a normal hopper, but lose out on some of the product which falls back down into the block it was growing from. I suggest that to fix this issue without people having to deal with extra height and loud mine carts is to add a blower block. This block when powered by redstone could sit next to a block and anything that falls into that block will be blown in the direction the blower is facing by a single block only. Meaning that if this block were placed at the base level of a sugarcane, you could sit the piston on top of it, the observer on top of that, and if any of that sugarcane falls into the base cane the blower will blow it forward by 1 block so that a regular hopper system could collect it. The blower being such a weak one, would potentially either be completely silent or very extremely low volume. Adding multiples around each other also wouldn't raise the volume very much, or any at all if blowers are deemed necessary to make noise to begin with.
