Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

I have also thought on this a lot.

I'm aware of the upcoming wither flower which can be crafted into black dye, BUT, I think if it is very rare and hard to obtain (which the name suggests) that to better balance the availability of dyes, I propose:

    • charcoal dyes items black, creating the same black dye as the wither flower after mixing it with water, either a water bottle or a water bucket

This option be welcomed by players who don't kill octopi (for moral or other reasons) or don't want to explore the world all the way to end-game (if that is a requisite for the wither flower). It would also bring a new, natural and interesting use to charcoal.

To further lessen the dependency on ink sacs i also suggest

    • coal can be crafted into a writing tool, with a coal and two sticks, one on either side, into a pencil

    • pencils as equivalent to ink and feather for writing books

    To motivate using pencils

    • pencils as the required tool for writing on signs, using up the pencil

In this way signs will function similar to books and be used in a more realistic manner. They will still be accessible early game, but spamming them will require more effort.

My friends and I play Minecraft in a Vegetarian/Vegan type style in which we don't kill any mobs that aren't hostile to us. Most dyes are obtainable by flowers, ores, or smelting certain materials with relative ease now, yet black dye is quite difficult (unless you want to kill squids).

Wither Roses add a method of getting black dye that doesn't impose harm on any passive mobs, but like the previous comment states, Wither Roses are very hard to come by.

I see no issues with allowing Coal and Charcoal to be crafted into Black Dye and would love to see this added to the game.

I can't believe you can build complex redstone but can't craft coal into black dye

I feel like having black eye be so readily available would defeat the purpose of squids. For those of you that don't want to kill them, what about being able to extract their ink with a bottle? You could change the Book and Quill to Journal, and have the crafting recipe use the bottle of ink.
