Your idea is good but I personally think that squirrels should have something special to them, like the ice age squirrel that can't really die.

What do you think about that?

The squirrels should be tamed too

I don’t know if it’s good to have them be tamable.
I think they should just spawn on trees and randomly plant saplings on grass blocks. This would, of course, count to MobGriefing.
They could also have about 2 Hearts but an incredibly strong regeneration. They shouldn’t take fall damage either.

I say tamed Squirrels should collect food items from trees like acorns (which would also be player-edible), apples, cocoa beans, and maybe even sweet berries. It would bring them to a player-specified location. Placing an acorn down (shift+place) signifies where to bring the items to.
Alternatively, they could just bring these items directly to you. This item-gathering function is activated by shift+using them and then doing the same on a tree.
This way they serve as a passive help in gathering food and resources.
They would probably bring nuts and sticks for the most part, rarely finding the other three.

Great! I love this, but could you give more detail, such as fur colour, what hunts it, etc?

For simplicity, squirrels should be attracted to Saplings rather than acorns. Their movement should also be shotgun-like and sporadic as it is in real life. I imagine they'd live around trees and rustle in their leaves.

Squirrels and hedgehogs can bring more life to forests!

IRL, Squirrels, due to interesting manipulation of their body weight and terminal velocity, are the only mammals that have a low enough terminal velocity to survive a fall from any height. This means that Squirrels would be like cats, immune to fall damage. Another idea for Squirrels is the ability to climb walls if they are made of wood planks, wood logs, or leaves. They can drop an acorn if killed, and have a rare chance to drop a random treasure item. Similarly, the Flying Squirrel is just like the Squirrel, but it can fly as well. Squirrels can eat Seeds and Acrons.
Acorns can be dropped by squirrels when they die, but can also be dropped by random chance if you destroy oak leaves or spruce leaves.

Yes this is a great idea I think squirrels should be able to take item that are dropped and run away they could also be feed with seeds because they eat seeds in real life

I honestly love this idea! I think we should be able to tame them, but i also think that they should be able to attack a hostile mob like wolves do when the player hits something, or like the cats that scare creepers. they should not take fall damage, fur color should be gray, black, brown, and red (like Russian reds.) what would hunt them is:foxes. (much like they do with chickens)

That's a great idea. I really love squirrels and would love to see them in Minecraft.

It would be cool if they buried their acorns for the winter and would occasionally forget where they buried them, in which after a long enough time and the right season, can grow into an oak sprout. They would then progress into a sapling, then a tree, and then into a snag once they reached a certain age.

I don't think they should be tamable, but only if they are raised in captivity. If the squirrel is continuously alarmed, but not too often, would attack the player, but if the player is holding seeds or acorns it would then follow the player, any sudden movement, may startle the squirrel and cause it to run away, similar to an ocelot.

They should be in birch forests to make it better as it could be in a biome vote.

With the wild update coming, the squirrel would be the perfect mob to make oak and dark oak forest more realistic. Specifically we could have the red squirrel so that they can collect acorns into one spot on the tree, stacking the acorns up to 4 just like candles/sea pickles/turtle eggs. Replace apples with acorns from oaks, add an apple tree and its own wood type, and add azalea wood too. Occasionally the squirrel could pick up a randomly dropped acorn which drops from in tact oak tree leaves that weren't placed by the player, then taking it back to its nut cache. They are really skittish and will run up the tree if you get too close, from there you can feed them an acorn to breed with another squirrel, or steal their acorns by hitting the cache. You can eat acorns raw but have a chance of sickness unless you roast them. Each acorn can restore 3 hunger (1 and 1/2 on the bar). They'll have a 5% chance to spawn from a large oak tree from world generation or from a player grown oak tree, up to 3 squirrels in one tree.

They could hang out on the birch tree mushrooms.

Different colour variants such as red, grey, black. They could live in oak and birch forests - I'd limit it to that because they should also strip the bark from a (limited) percentage of the trees, unless mob griefing is switched off. I like the idea that they could help to gather resources, although this is now the allay's mechanic.

I would say squirrels can live in a drey (nest), which you can build out of three sticks and two nuts. You should be able to harvest nuts from their nests using scissors. The nest should be two or three blocks high in the trees. I would say squirrels should not be tamable, but you can build nests that they move into. They can jump over a one block high fence, but not over two.

Great idea! Forests in Minecraft are missing a lot of animals that make them a forest rather than just a plains biome
