Bats are one of the least developed creatures in the game at the moment, sadly. However there are many ways these beauties can become much more useful (or possibly dangerous) with some minor tweaking.
Similar to the silverfish, when the bat is spotted it could give the player a hint to where an important area might be (which in the silverfishes’ case, the end portal). For bats, I think it should be a bit simpler and have them spawn around areas near lava pools, mainly areas where the pools aren’t totally in view. This is a simple yet useful tweak, but I think bats can be improved but there more things I think can be added as well
They can fight off insects (spiders). Most bats feed off of mosquitos and small insects, but for a litttle touch you could find them attacking spiders in a cave, similar to how you might find a wolf attacking a sheep.
The last edition cleanly ties into this one that I feel should have been made a reality beforehand, and that is bats should be added to the surface. This can be turned into a very neat mechanic where bats can be lured to your shelter where they can make their stay and make sure your grounds are spider free. To improvise they could be lured in using the lead or for a more practical alternative a spider’s eye, which could possibly be used to breed more bats.
I think there could also be a cool drawback where sometimes if a bat gets too hurt and has recently not been fed, they could become infected and if provoked by the player could inflict the player with a poison.
These are just my suggestions, if any one of them strike your fancy that’s great but if they don’t that’s fine as well. I think that some of these (mainly the first suggestion) should definitely be added to the game as these creatures have been left untouched for so long but hold so much potential. Even if none of my suggestions are considered these creatures need an update, and not just an update where they bite you on occasion.
