I was about to create a post about undergroud villages but saw this post and thought I would leave my idea as a comment. Hopefully people enjoy it.

    Underground Village

You are rafting down an underground waterfall when you fall in a massive lake. On the far side of the cavern, you see twinkling of yellow lights. It is an underground village and you begin paddling towards it.

Underground villages occasionally generate in large caverns underground. Made up of stone huts with some buildings being built into the walls of the cavern, these villages differ from normal villages in a few ways:

    • A new type of villager, called a miner, inhabits underground villages. Miners offer stone and ores such as iron, coal and copper. At higher levels, a miner will offer gold ore, Lapis lazuli, crystals and eventually sculk blocks and sensors.
    • A new type of golem called a cobble golem protects underground villages. Cobble golems are shorter than regular golems and can wander nearby underground tunnels. They are covered in glow berries illuminating their surroundings.
    • Underground villagers farm mushrooms and glow berries as normal crops will not grow underground.
    • Underground villagers hang lanterns around their villages to ward of aggressive mobs which might attack them.

Or maybe the inhabitants could be warlins, a humanoid that is half goblin and half warden like the one I saw at Minecraft Live. These creatures will hunt wardens for food, just like how piglins hunt hoglins for food. Also, you'll be able to trade with them using any stone like blocks(stone, cobblestone, basalt, blackstone, diorite, and granite.

Perhaps with the new 1.17 update, the village should spawn on the edge of the new underground lakes. I also think it would be apt if they used wood from the new Azalea trees that you can find in the lush cave biome, or if a lush cave biome wasn't near them, I suppose it would be more likely for the settlers to just have to rummage around for any bits of wood they can find, so it could also look good if the houses were made out of lots of different kinds of wood. Perhaps the villages could be made out of timber coming from abandoned mineshafts?

This would be ace with the new cave update. Imagine villages inside those huge open caves!

I think that occasionally these underground villages should spawn on floating islands in the largest caverns, though the caverns would have to be huuuuuge for this to work

I imagine the houses carved and dug right out of the stone walls of the cave.

There would be 1 or 2 small farms, since farming without sunlight is difficult.

No need for many iron golems, if the cave is well lit, no mobs will spawn.

I imagine the villagers found a existing cave and started from there.

I like to think about what if there are like different platforms that one or two houses can be on

It would be really cool if a new light source was added along with this and it could only be found in these underground vilages.

I think it would be cool if there was a big circular hole down to the cave society, with a stairway down. And the villagers in my mind would be a paler, stronger, more courageous and mining society. They could defend themselves and will attack you it you attack them.8

En cualquier caso sería aún mejor que el minar en las cuevas tenga otro objetivo más como por decir un templo de las cuevas

Yes! amazing idea. I think it would be cool tho if these villages were unique from the ones on the surface and instead host villagers.

I would also like underground villages to either spawn or at least be possible to build underground. With the new caverns update that will be a much bigger deal. At present, a villager will not spawn unless there is a clear path to the sky which means that underground villages currently require holes punched all the way up. You can use glass to cap it off, but other than that you just can't even build a village underground yourself and expect the villagers to spawn.

If, instead, the doors checked for light levels at noon then it wouldn't matter if the door is on the surface or deep underground with light sources above them. Either way they will spawn and the villagers will act like they are in a real village.

That change would be neccessary for this idea to work.

I think they should also add a alone building or small camps that are abandoned to add to the abandoned mineshafts. These would be dark buildings made out of stone or like such nearby materials. block of ores can be stored around the buildings as the pervious workers stored them there.  the building could store tools, ore, or beds for the miners. out side of the building is an unlit campfire, cobwebs litter the area. something cool to stumble across. the abandoned mineshafts are cool and i think they could use an addition.

I think the "villages everywhere" mentality is a bit flawed. People think it's "cool" to have underground villages, or whatever else, but they don't really add much.

Firstly, this idea doesn't make much sense. Why would the villagers actively choose to settle underground? They're clearly in a lot more danger of monsters all the time. Gonna need lots of golems. If they're a mining colony, it would make more sense to settle above ground with easy access to a mine instead.

They wouldn't really useful to the player. It doesn't seem like they're so much better than normal villages to make seeking one out worth it, and if they were it'd make the above-ground villages a heft less useful.

I feel like the underground is supposed to have a hostile vibe. You only find dangerous mobs down there (besides bats, but they actually make sense). There's no safe havens until you make one, as the player is far more capable of exploring the underground than the villagers. (I have more arguments, but character limit.)

It could make a bit more sense for the underground to be inhabited by the illagers instead. They're already pale and don't seem to like sunlight, and are much more capable of defending themselves. The underground would be a great place to hide and do their thing. Maybe the illusioner could hide in these underground settlements. Maybe if you've killed enough villagers or something, they'll become neutral toward you, and maybe be willing to help you out in exchange for some sort of labor.

Especially in the new Caves update! There's going to be all these cavernous places, and it owuld be extremely cool if there was a village you could sort of pit stop at while mining.

Maybe as to make them more rare they only have a chance of spawning in a dripstone cave

    Theme Idea: Glow villagers

How will these villagers survive without light, torches?

Well torches would work but it would be very ugly to have a giant cavern with torches everywhere. Thats where the new glow squid mob comes in, instead of villagers they will be glow villagers, glow golems, villages , etc. there will be patches of glowstone, or maybe some new glowing block. They will still use torches, just less. Also, I think that glow squid should swim in those waters you mentioned

Of course, the villagers wont actually glow, though the golems might.

To summarize I think the village should have a glow them, as how else would they survive?

I was just about to make this suggestion! I think it'd be wonderful. I feel like the houses would be mainly stone with a little wood, and maybe tree farms! They could use lanterns for light and use moss as pathways. I imagine they would be somewhat close to the surface too. There could be the normal villagers along with the miner villager who could sell pickaxes or random ores. I feel like the top trade could be a really good enchanted pickaxe or even diamonds. The villages could be lit up for a somewhat large distance to prevent mobs from spawning, and there could be fighter villagers to prevent zombie attacks if the iron golems aren't good enough.

estarían geniales las aldeas subterráneas, solo que los de mojang tendrían que programar o algo así para que los mobs hostiles no se spawnearan porque no tendrían sentido ese tipo de aldeas debido a que todos los aldeanos estarían muertos :3

[‎the underground villages would be great, only the mojang ones would have to program or something so that the hostile mobs wouldn't spawnearan because they wouldn't make sense of such villages because all the villagers would be dead:3‎] -translated by admin

Now with the wild update coming we are getting deep dark !!, So maybe it's the perfect time to add underground villages but not just normal villagers
    .
Villagers are living underground from quite a few time so they have secert things which we don't know what yet... But obviously something we can't find anywhere else
    Something we won't in overworld
something if which we get, we scream out of joy and happiness.!!

rather than just trading we should get quests too.!
To start a quest with a random map marked with an x and there could be just a big skeleton or a army of creepers or anything, or maybe just normal zombies with increased health and damage
something which adds adventure to minecraft.!

With the interest in underground biomes are the developers ready to create villager structures underground?  The villagers would probably be named differently compared to illlagers and pillagers but if we make the buildings smaller and more earthen you could make small communities underground.  Trading would be tied to the new items and blocks in the game but the professions would be the same.  You could connect these communities to the end of mine shafts to make them feel like miners.  You would probably need a lot of lighting to protect these villages or you develop a natural stone globe around the village.

This already sounds great. And with the the addition of 1.18 and a bit from 1.19, maybe they can be specialized around what biome they are in underground(Ex.Lush Village, Dripstone Village, Deep Village

and maybe, dare I say, a Ancient Village.) Maybe Even a whole biome specified for a village.

What if the village was protected by a new type of warden? And the villagers should look a bit different, like maybe a sculk pattern cloak and a glowing thing on front like a warden's?

Easy access to the surface would make a lot of sense for this structure. It could also have unabandoned mineshafts connected, to make it look like the villagers used them.
