This makes no sense; diamond is a mineral, not a metal. I don't think you can extract anything meaningful from diamonds by just heating it up as much as possible.

No.  First of all, diamond is a mineral, no a metal.  It doesn’t melt.  Second of all, the burning point of diamond is ridiculously high.

wow. didn't realize a game where you try not to get killed by zombies, skeletons, and creepers (among other things), as well as try to kill a dragon yourself, needed to be so grounded in reality.

I think the fact that we can craft armor from diamonds to begin with throws the logic of the entire process out the window.

The fact that iron, gold, and chain armor can all be smelted down to a nugget gives this idea some amount of logic.

I'm just not sure I see the point.  The main source of iron/gold/chain gear that I melt down is mob drops from my spawner based farms.  Getting diamond armor from that kind of farm is extremely rare, so I doubt I'd ever get enough diamond nuggets to get one full diamond back.

This could work. My idea... Some fireworks require diamonds. Making them very expensive. Breaking a diamond makes diamond shards. Use the diamond shards for the firework effect.

This could be useful, especially with the village and pillage update where it is easier than ever to just get throwaway diamond items to unlock new tiers of trading. or be used in a sort of disassemble system.

I made an idea about more chains, and diamond nuggets could be used to make Diamond Chain if they decide they want to add Diamond Chain? Thank you!

Maybe not diamond nuggets, but what about diamond chips?  Diamond chips are a real thing, used in both jewelry and tools.  A diamond chip is an excellent analog to golden and iron nuggets and now netherite scrap. They could be used as the byproduct in recycling of diamond armor, tools and weapons, and also used for other new purposes, like adding a protective and/or decorative layer/sheen to other stuff.

Broken, used and defective diamonds are in fact recycled into chips (and dust) for other purposes, and while we can't quite "craft" a diamond from diamond chips in the real world, it would make perfect sense in Minecraft.

Another possible name would be diamond facet.  This has nice imagery, and diamonds are "made up of" facets, even if not quite so "real world" as diamond chips.

Good idea, but perhaps rename them to diamond shards, which would make more sense imo.

I love the idea of recycling diamond armour into nuggets (or shards or chips). The name nuggets matches gold and iron, shards sounds the coolest, and chips is the most realistic, any of them could work. I would prefer if you could combine 4 diamond shards to make a diamond instead of 9 diamond nuggets.

It has a good reason to exist, you can find useless vanishing and binding diamond armour that you can not combine in a crafting table anymore. It would be also nice to have diamond nuggets used for cosmetics i don't know if a chain would fit into minecraft's style very well but a ring or something else would be cool.

I don't think diamond nuggets make any sense, even within the logic of Minecraft. But breaking down diamond equipment to diamond shards, and using these shards instead of a full diamond in firework recipes, would be a great change. The current recipe is very expensive, obviously partly by design, but I think this change would keep those fireworks feeling special while not being something nobody ever bothers to craft.

I don't think it makes sense to be able to combine diamond shards into a full diamond, so I'd be fine if they couldn't be recombined, but amethyst shards work that way so there is precedent for it.
