Bed's bottom layer depends on the wood type

you know how you can make beds with 3 same colored wool and 3 wood planks? let's say you were gonna make a red bed, if you were to use 3 red wool, and 3 spruce planks. The bottom layer would be spruce instead of oak.

    so that makes 16 colors x 6 wood types = 96 different types of beds. i think it's way too much

    I think this is a good idea since they've added different colored beds and different wood signs through the years. Although like another comment said, this would result in a very large amount of bed variants. In creative, it might be limited to white or red beds with different wood types, and you would have to craft it from there, similar to how you obtain banners in creative.

    I don't see why it would be too much.

    Sure, it's  just a minor detail and won't bring too much to the game, but I have to ask... why not?

    how would it work if you used 3 different types of wood? (i'm pretty sure you can do that, same as more types of wood for chests)

    Maybe each wood type could provide changes to the bed frame, such as posts on each corner, a guard on the sides, or a panel on the top.

    I think it would if you used three wood types, the bed would be crafted as the most used wood type, or the wood type an the far left.

    The bed has 16 colors and needs 2 blocks to be placed.
    So there are 32 blocks for the bed
    If you now add all 8 types of wood, there would be 256 blocks that would have to be programmed.
    It is very easy to separate the duvet cover from the wood.
    16 colors with 2 blocks each so 32 blocks
    and the piece of wood in all 8 types

    In summary, either you program
    256 blocks for each single bed or 32 blocks for the colors and 8 blocks for the wood (total 40 blocks)

    I do agree, that's a lot of different types of beds. But maybe they could be like banners, where you have to craft them or put them in a loom. There are an uncountable amount of banner combos, so why not beds? They don't have to be in the inventory, and it wouldn't be too hard to craft them. I like this idea.

    I am in favor of programming it separately.
    From version 1.20 it would be 10 types of wood and thus 320 programmed blocks.
    But if you separate them, then there would only be 42 programmings.
    And for each additional type of wood, you would not have to program 32 blocks, but only one block.

    Hmm.  Lots of people also want to use banners as blankets/bed spreads.  How about beds change to using custom NBT data for both the wood type and wool color, and can have any banner added for the blanket, with that feature working like armor stands and item frames?  "Breaking" the bed would first remove the banner, also like the stands and frames.

    Texture-wise, it may make sense to have one file for the frame and one for the top.  That wouldn't be an absurd amount of work.

    320 (and more with each new wood) bed types seems pretty crazy.  Simplifying it to NBT data seems like less of an overhaul.  If they're added as unique items, regardless of how it works under the hood, the beds may then deserve their own creative inventory tab, so they don't clutter another group.

    Crafting with any mixed wood types would default to the original oak style.  I don't see mixing types in the output being practical, unless it's weighted to select whatever uses at least two of the three planks.  You can make a resource pack if you want birch rails and dark oak posts.
