Long ago, when Notch was still apart of Mojang, he planned to add a Red Dragon. Sadly, it was forgotten, and as a result, never added. That could all change eventually, anything could happen. Just in case the Red Dragon is added, I have some ideas.
Edit: This post has changed A LOT from its original state. It is more fleshed out and more balanced now, and in my opinion it is so much better.
Size/Texture/Model
The Red Dragons base color should be #9e2700. The model of the dragon should be a little different and more complex than the Ender Dragon. The size of the Red Dragon should be 3/4 the size of the Ender Dragon.
Spawn
The Red Dragon would be extremely rare, only 3 should spawn in a world. When you find the Red Dragon it's asleep. In order to wake the dragon you either have to hit it, stand on it, or place the Ender Dragon egg on a pedestal.
Pedestal
The dragon would be sleeping underneath a pedestal. Now, anything can wake this dragon, hitting it, placing blocks, killing other creatures(But the structure is lit up) In order to reach the pedestal, you HAVE to do a challenging parkour course to reach it. You CANNOT place blocks, that would wake the dragon. You CANNOT touch the sleeping dragon, that would wake it as well. The pedestal would be floating, so you MUST do the parkour at all costs. Well, when entering the structure, you might land on top of it when going down. Which of course I would not suggest doing, if you accidentally land on the dragon, it wakes up. Once you place the egg on the pedestal, the dragon would wake up, eat the egg, and face you directly(I guess like a cut scene, a cool little cut scene in Minecraft that shows what happens.Either that or it just happens in front of you) Once the dragon digests the egg(Which might take one in game day) it will be tamed.
The Structure
The structure would be huge, a castle like structure with a huge hole in the caves. The only thing you can see is the castle with four doors with bridges leading to the middle of it. On the bridges there might be signs of warning? Like, "The Egg is what he wants", or "BEWARE, don't bring matches!" not anything threatening, but something cute and fun, but in the meantime still gets the player prepared. The structure would probably be 50 blocks in height, depending on the castle size they go with and the giant hole underground. It would be easier to find(Use Feather Falling 24/7) It would probably be once of the biggest structure in game if they go with the whole bridges to the castle thing, but they don't have to.
Waking the Red Dragon
If you wake up the Red Dragon, it will not attack you. You've freed the End, you don't need another dragon boss. You have three tries, the dragon WILL warn you, you place one block, it warns you. The warning HAS to be VERY noticeable, you don't want people building up, not paying attention, and losing the dragon. So, maybe it roars and throws you back away from the dragon. Each time would be louder and stronger. Three strikes, and once it happens a fourth time, the dragon would fly up out of the castle and into the Overworld. It would be set free and you cant do anything about it, but over time(Maybe ten in game days) the Red Dragon would return to its slumber and you can try again.
Digestion of the Egg
Once the Red Dragon has the egg, it'll digest the egg. The digestion of the egg, if you do nothing would take one in game day. There is a catch, you can do things to speed up the process, and make the process take longer. To speed up the process: You can give the Red Dragon riches(Only Emeralds, Diamonds, or Gold) nothing else, its not that easy. You could also give it animal sacrifices, but only your pets. It wouldn't just eat your pets, but you have to willingly give the pet to the dragon. It will kill the pet, but it is the best thing you can do to speed up the time. One more thing you could do to speed up the time is throw good potions on it(Like speed) It is the least effective thing when making it go faster, but it still works a lot. Things that could slow down the time: You could break the castle(Not that effective) You could steal the riches he guards(Doing this would remove the ability to offer him gifts, and it slows down the time more) Finally, you could hit it, it would slow time, and it would slash you back(5 HP). There is a cap on each of these, once the clock hits 1 and a half in game days, it caps on slowing it down, and once it hits half an in game day then you can't make it go any faster. Each time you speed up the time, the dragon respects you more. Each time you slow down the time, he respects you less. Something would pop up in the chat once you hit the maximums as well.
Using the Dragons Respect
The dragon has a set number of respect at the beginning, lets call it "Normal Respect" If you slow down the time to the max his powers become less powerful. If you speed up the time, his powers become as powerful as they go.
Normal Respect Powers: At normal he would have 50 HP(25 hearts) Not that much, but what are the chances of this thing dying. You could ride it, and it would fly at three times the sprinting speed. It would be the best form of travel, and would never "run out" of fuel. It would have two things it can do, breathe fire and attack mobs. You can control both of these from the Red Dragon. You can directly control its fire breathing, and you can turn on and off the attacking other mobs(7 HP of damage to each mob). When flying, on or off, it will never attack mobs, it will always fly in the direction you want. The Red Dragon would always stay in a 30 block radius of where you are. It will NEVER follow anyone else besides you.
Low Respect Powers: At his worst he would have 40 HP(20 hearts) You could ride it, and it would fly at twice the sprinting speed. You could set the dragon to attack mobs and when flying each mob has a 50/50 chance to be attacked(5 HP to each mob). The Red Dragon would stay within a 40 block radius of where you are. It will NEVER follow anyone else besides you.
High Respect Powers: At his best he would have 70 HP(35 hearts) You could ride it, and it would fly four times the sprinting speed. The dragon could fire breath and attack mobs(9 HP to each mob), but you could lead animals on the tail of the dragon. You could lead 5 animals at once on his tail. The fire breathing would have twice as big of a span as well. It will NEVER follow anyone else besides you.
Mid Respect Powers: Powers in between normal, full low, and full high would be done with percentages. 20% into the full high you can lead one animal on its tail, 40% two animals, something along those lines.
Attacking the Dragon
Whenever you hit the dragon it will slash you back, dealing 5 HP(2.5 hearts) If its obvious you are trying to kill it, it will go full battle mode, the more respect you have the more time it takes for the Dragon to get mad. Once the dragon is mad it will actively try to attack you, same goes with anything else. If it gets hoarded by a bunch of zombies, it will kill.
Drops
The Red Dragon would drop nothing, there's no nee Maybe something like a Red Dragon egg or scales? It doesn't need drops, but it could have some.
Resurrection?(Unsure about this one)
If they take the whole resurrecting the Dragon thing, it might be an adult that you'd have to regain the respect of, or a baby dragon you could train. Kill a certain mob in front of it, that mob would be a higher priority to kill than others. Raising the Red Dragon could deal with the respect as well, the more valid you are in the Dragons coming of age determines how respected you are.
End City Loot
The Red Dragon can wear armor, but only dragon armor. Dragon armor is found very rarely in end cities, but that's the only place you can find dragon armor. There are diamond, gold, iron, and leather dragon armors. Low Respect can't have diamond dragon armor though, but bringing the Red Dragon armor at the start could make the respect you gain higher. Also, in the end cities, you have a 0.05% chance to find the dragon tracker, which is a map to the Red Dragons castle.
Benefits: Adding this dragon would completely expand the world of Minecraft. Adding more to the dragon race, a second species of dragon. Not only that, but it would the second longest grind in the game, it would so much work, but it would be so worth it. The final, final end. A reward to work towards, a use to a reward to get a better reward. The game would gain more depth to it, a bigger world(Not really, but it would feel like it) This would be a fully welcomed addition, and something you don't have to have. One plus is if you're on a server, and you've got the Red Dragon you're basically a god.
