I think there should be a new proffesion of villager that trades recipes that need to be put inside the autocrafting table in order for it to know what to craft. Here is also the first option too balance this feature. Crafting recipes can be tweaked in price(range) and maybe in quality level if recipes have a durabiltyvalue. This would encourage contiuned trading and provide the challenge of getting the cheapest and/or best villager to trade with.
The recipe would then be inserted into the auto crafting table. The auto crafting table itself should behave simular to a brewing stand right now. in order for it to work it would need some sort of fuel, this could be blaze powder like the brewing stand or normal fuel that can be used in a furnace, again this is another balancing option. This fuel and the recipe can be inserted with hoppers pointing into the side of the auto crafting block. The resources to be crafted themselves would have be inserted from the top. Here another design question arises: should they be inserted in the "proper" order or can they be inserted in a random order. Think this would have to be tested. the proper order would provide a better challenge to the player but might make it too hard for newer players. On the other hand this supposed to be an endgame feature and change the manual crafing in any way, so they would still be fine.
As with the brewing stand once the all the materials, fuel and in this case the recipe are inserted the crafting process begins. This crafting time is yet another way to tweak the balancing of this feature. I think it shouldnt be instant but not as slow where its useless and everyone uses the crafting book instead. hopper speed or 9000 items per hour might be a good starting point.
Same as with the brewing stand the output should be on the buttom, whereas the crafted items or uncrafted if the recipe doesnt fit or the wrong materials are inserted and the recipe itself can be pulled out. the recipe should always come out last so that multiple items can be crafted at the same time without having to reinsert the recipe all the time but it is also possible to change the recipe with an automatic setup, allowing the players to come up with elaborate systems with redstone.
If auto crafting where to be done this way the devs would have alot of options to adjust the difficulty and it would provide alot of gameplay, getting the villager trade, getting fuel, the resources themselves and designing and building a machine around it. Players that dont want to build such a machine or dont have the resources for such a machine can still use the manual crafting (with the crafting book) which will be faster on a small scale anyway.
The crafting recipe for the auto crafting table itself doesnt really matter costwise since it's a one time investment like a furnace or brewing stand. I would suggest 4 iron, 4 redstone and crafting table in the middle.
