In the recent updates I have had annoyance with my use of commands because over time the number ids have been less accepted. I was an avid user of world edit in 1.7.10 and have quite a few id numbers memorized. Now that I'm playing vanilla on the newer updates it was annoying having to type out the item name instead with the format minecraft:<item name>. With tab putting the minecraft: part in a little faster it was livable with how rare it was I needed to spawn something in. But with the gamemode ids now only being taken written out that is where I have some trouble.
For example with the /gamemode command. It is a lot faster to type /gamemode 1 when my horse is suffocating in a wall for the millionth time then to type /gamemode creative then break the wall down. With being under pressure typos are common even just on the gamemode part. Even with using tab that brings up a whole slew of other though processes that must happen before I can save my horse. Do I have gamemode or gamerule selected? Is it actually typed in or is it still suggesting? Then do I want to type c tab tab or creative or just 1? Typing 1 is a lot faster then c tab realizing I needed to push it twice because once is just a suggestion now.
The /effect command is similar with less life or death. It used to be I could just type /effect <my name> 16 1000 when I need some night vision but now its /effect give <my name> minecraft:night_vision 1000. Which ones shorter? I was used to using tab for my name but even with that the command is a lot longer and just typing 16 is a lot faster then minecraft:night_vision. This one is more about convenience then anything else but this is supposed to be fun and convenience is important. With other effects its not as bad because I only remember the ids for speed and night vision but not being able to use 16 when I'm playing creative is super annoying
It is the same case with /give. Typing /give <my name> 4 64 is a lot shorter then /give <my name> minecraft:cobble_stone 64. That and the names for some of the items aren't even what they are called in game like oak logs. The id is 17 but the minecraft: format id is minecraft:log which wouldn't be my first guess when trying to spawn some. (Which I ended up giving up on and just grabbing some from creative because I couldn't figure out the new id).
I'm not saying that the minecraft: format should be abandoned and have everything switched back to the number ids because for some people words are easier to remember. All I'm saying is that the number ids shouldn't be discontinued. Can both still work for those who can remember numbers like their life depended on it? That'd be great. I want my numbers back
